The #ContentChat Bulletin: GenAI is Still Not Ready for Creative Prime Time

It's been fun looking at everyone's most recent round of AI-generated portraits and action figures.

You can tell that people realllly needed a bit of a distraction by how much some of them look like the human they're imitating.

Sure, they say they just typed in "Create a picture of me based on what you know about me" and out popped that spitting image of themselves with their dog and a bunch of on point, seasonally appropriate accessories.

But I have to call shenanigans on that for most of them.

Why? Because I, too, have a paid ChatGPT account that knows a TON about me. It even knows my website URL. But this is who it thinks I am:

OK, maybe ChatGPT was getting me confused with Heidi Cohen or another content marketing lady with red hair. So I uploaded the same photo I use in the sign off to this newsletter.

Let's try this again.

OK, maybe this was too hard, Let's try the "make an action figure of me" prompt instead. Surely THAT should be easier, right?

Well, at least I got some ideas for new slogans, if I ever get tired of "No more random acts of content."

But the biggest takeaway is this: AI is a great helper, but it needs significant human support, context, and feedback.

It needs to deeply understand your content strategy, your brand, and what your differentiators are if it can hope to help you create anything more complex than a meta description for a blog post.

GenAI is a fantastic tool, but it's nowhere near being a replacement for your content team. No matter what certain CEOs may seem to think.

When I attended CEX (the Creator Economy Expo) last year, I had Ruth Carter be my witness that I was committing to writing a book before the next year's conference. Spoiler Alert: I did it! And I'll be publishing it through Tilt Publishing. But that is a story for the next edition of the newsletter. Because right now, I want to share some of the conversations and presentations from CEX that I believe are critical for all content marketers — not just creators — to hear as we enter the 2026...

It can be fun to break the mold—to try something new and unexpected in your content marketing program. But there is one mold you shouldn’t try to break: your brand’s voice. Yet, it seems to be the one standard that most frequently does get broken. But why is that? Unfortunately, there isn’t any one answer to that question. The many reasons why brands have inconsistent voice include: No defined brand voice chart for content creation Multiple freelancers creating content you haven’t explicitly...

SEO has never felt like a content marketer's BFF. Rather, it's been more like that annoying relative who follows you around at family events, making sure you don't forget about them. Which is why it seems unlikely that its cousin—generative AI optimization (GAO)—should even be allowed to sit at our lunch table. But here's the thing: GAO, unlike SEO, is actually all about context. And when we are creating content, it's the context that other people always try to take out in the name of shorter...
