The #ContentChat Bulletin: ABL Staycation Edition

Hey there!

I'm taking this week off for a much-needed staycation.

That means we're also taking a break from our usual newsletter format, so I can actually take a breather!

Sp, while I'm hooking up my new printer, reorganizing my closets, making headway with my reading pile, and having some truly epic lunches around town, I hope that you will take a moment to commit to always be learning—the ABL in our subject line.

This may seem like a tough time to invest in yourself and your career. With so much uncertainty, maybe this isn't the right moment to register for that Fall conference you've had your eye on. But what about something that only requires investing your time?

You see, this morning the folks from MarketingProfs sent me a reminder about their 100% FREE virtual B2B marketing all stars event that's happening tomorrow. these sorts of intensive education events are always free for MarketingProfs members (and I've been a member for 109+ years now). But this one is also open to non-members too, for free, to give you an inside look at what their professional development content is like!

And no, it's not a lineup full of vendors pushing their wares either. It's the same awesome folks you see at their ongoing events:

  • How Humans Win in an AI Marketing World (Mark Schaefer)
  • AI Tools and Tactics: From Research to Writing and Beyond (Andy Crestodina)
  • 5 Surprising, Rule-Bending Tactics for B2B Marketers (Nancy Harhut)
  • 3 Ways Surveys Help You Make Smarter Decisions, Faster, presented by SurveyMonkey (Morgan Lehmann)
  • How to Create Incredibly Valuable and Truly Original B2B Content (Melanie Deziel)
  • Reverse Engineering Google's AI: Unlocking Emerging SEO Opportunities (Dale Bertrand)
  • From Good to Game-Changing: The Power Play of Human Instinct + AI Speed, presented by Wrike (Christine Royston)
  • How to Simplify Your Marketing Strategy to Enable Revenue Growth (Carlos Hidalgo)
  • Brand Marketing vs. Product Marketing (Samantha Rideout)
  • NEW Email Tests You Haven't Tried! (Jay Schwedelson)
  • Make Me Care: How to Compete on the Impact of Your Ideas, Not the Volume of Your Marketing (Jay Acunzo)

You can register here—and tell them I sent you, not because I'm getting any sort of kickbacks for it (I'm not), but just so they know how much I love them!

When I attended CEX (the Creator Economy Expo) last year, I had Ruth Carter be my witness that I was committing to writing a book before the next year's conference. Spoiler Alert: I did it! And I'll be publishing it through Tilt Publishing. But that is a story for the next edition of the newsletter. Because right now, I want to share some of the conversations and presentations from CEX that I believe are critical for all content marketers — not just creators — to hear as we enter the 2026...

It can be fun to break the mold—to try something new and unexpected in your content marketing program. But there is one mold you shouldn’t try to break: your brand’s voice. Yet, it seems to be the one standard that most frequently does get broken. But why is that? Unfortunately, there isn’t any one answer to that question. The many reasons why brands have inconsistent voice include: No defined brand voice chart for content creation Multiple freelancers creating content you haven’t explicitly...

SEO has never felt like a content marketer's BFF. Rather, it's been more like that annoying relative who follows you around at family events, making sure you don't forget about them. Which is why it seems unlikely that its cousin—generative AI optimization (GAO)—should even be allowed to sit at our lunch table. But here's the thing: GAO, unlike SEO, is actually all about context. And when we are creating content, it's the context that other people always try to take out in the name of shorter...
