Summer is meant to include BBQ, leisurely strolls, and making a dent in the to-read pile stacked on my desk. Instead, I've spent the past two weeks battling some sort of viral ick—but at least I've gotten to do some reading!

This year, however, Summer is ALSO something else really special to me. It's the 10-year anniversary of my taking on hosting #ContentChat and going out on my own as a full-time content strategy consultant and fractional content leader!

For those who weren't around here 10 years ago, #ContentChat was a thriving Twitter chat where marketers and content creators would hang out, share their expertise, get help from one another, and ask experts in the field for insights.

What's really cool is that I used to keep a running list of my guests and topics. Here's a peek at my first few months:

I love that this list is full of people I am still learning from and can't wait to catch up with at conferences each year. Thank you SO MUCH to Anne Janzer, Wayne Hendry, Amy Higgins, Troy Sandige, Joe Pulizzi, Hannah Kovacs, Maureen Jann, Matt Benati, Gini Dietrich, Andy Crestodina, Andrea M Fuller, Ann Handley, Ardath Albee, Tataiana Beale, Jordan Feise, Kerry O'Shea Gorgone, and Brandie McCallum for getting my initial #ContentChat conversations off to such an inspiring and truly useful start!

While today's #ContentChat has evolved into something altogether different, I try to keep the same spirit alive by inviting super smart people who have something to teach me—and hopefully you, too!—about creating content that truly connects with others.

I would not be the marketer I am today, or have written Content Foundations, without these shared conversations over the years.

And I hope that one day we'll find a new platform that makes this sort of dialogue and group knowledge-sharing just as effortless.

Coming Up on #ContentChat

Content Chat is my weekly LinkedIn Live video chat focused on sharing expertise and ideas amongst the content marketing community. Join the conversation on Mondays at noon Pacific / 3 p.m. Eastern. RSVP for our upcoming conversations by clicking the chat date below to get a reminder and to access the chat.

  • Today on #ContentChat, I'm diving into Chapter 5 of Content Foundations: Refining Content Ideation and Planning. I'll discuss how structured templates, repeatable workflows, and thoughtful planning systems can transform content creation from a reactive exercise into a strategic advantage. If your content planning process feels like a cycle of brainstorming, overthinking, and scrambling to hit deadlines, this conversation is for you.
  • Next Monday (June 22) on #ContentChat, I'm exploring Chapter 6 of Content Foundations: Collaborating with External and Internal Talent. In this conversation, I'll discuss how to build the systems that make collaboration smoother and more scalable. From onboarding documentation and contributor guides to project management workflows, content briefs, and review processes, I'll share practical ways to reduce chaos, improve visibility, and help everyone create better content with greater confidence.

Free MarketingProfs Content Foundations Workshop

Every marketing team wants content that is consistent, scalable, and unmistakably their own.

As marketing teams incorporate AI into their content workflows, that goal becomes even more important. The organizations seeing the best results aren't relying on prompts alone—they've built strong content foundations that guide how content gets created, reviewed, and reused.

In my upcoming MarketingProfs workshop, Training AI on Your Brand, I'll share the documentation, frameworks, and governance practices that help marketing teams create more consistent, on-brand content with AI.

Drawing from the frameworks in my book, Content Foundations, we'll explore how to document your brand voice, create AI-ready content guidelines, and build reusable systems that support human creators, external partners, and AI tools alike. You'll also receive a practical workbook to help you begin applying these frameworks within your own organization.

If you're looking for practical ways to scale content creation while maintaining quality and consistency, I'd love to have you join us. The workshop is free for all MarketingProfs members (including free members).

Until next time, stay safe and be well!

Cheers,

Erika

Kupo and Bulleit enjoying the view on one of our walks in Sea Ranch last weekend. My partner and I trekked to the Coast this past weekend with our bulldogs, taking a long weekend road trip to celebrate my birthday. I wanted to listen to and see the ocean, and have a hot tub available for soaking whenever I wanted. We found a great vacation rental in Sea Ranch that ticked all the boxes. When we arrived and started unpacking, I noticed a few things that made this vacation rental a lot different...

If I were giving today’s #ContentChat talk in person, I wonder if I’d be met by picketers holding signs reading, “Boycott all writers who use AI!” Everywhere I’ve gone online over the past two weeks, I’ve seen increased hostility toward AI use, like the Threads post from someone outing another writer for using AI. As it turns out, though, they were using it to create ads to sell their books—not to write the books themselves. Yet, this was somehow still grounds for ruining all the authors’...

It's probably an anomaly that it's taken nearly 10 years of volunteering with shelter animals to have one of them happily poop on me. But that just happened. She was a Frenchie with coloring very similar to my own Kupo's. I'd been giving her all the scritches and scratchies. She'd been having an amazing time. Then, all of a sudden, she hopped up onto her bed, moving as far away from me as was possible in her kennel. I misinterpreted it, at first, as her being overstimulated and done with our...
