Hi there.
In the past week, I saw dozens of former colleagues laid off from what they thought would be the jobs they’d retire from.
I also saw several other friends laid off from organizations that are taking a slow trickle approach to restructuring and layoffs.
Then I reviewed another three laid-off friends’ resumes and gave them thoughts on how to make their accomplishments stand out.
While none of these layoffs affected me, personally, like all of us, being adjacent to this turmoil—and grief—takes its toll on those of us supporting our friends, too. And those who are left behind in the organizations whose content and marketing teams frequently take the deepest cuts when budget shortfalls (or shareholder value needs) require them.
As we come into the second half of Q4, and the holidays, I urge you to take a personal day when you can to focus on YOU.
Make a point to regularly check-in with yourself and make sure you are prioritizing taking care of yourself—not just chasing after your to-do list and meeting everyone else’s needs.
Need some help with some easy, inexpensive, self-care ideas? Here are some of my favorites:
Don’t feel guilty about taking the time to make sure you are OK. You can’t be a rock star content marketer busting through your goals if you aren’t making sure your own needs are met, first.

Have you documented your 2025 content strategy? If so—congratulations! It feels great to have this core piece of marketing guidance in place, doesn’t it? But here’s the thing: it’s only as effective as the frameworks you support it with. Your content strategy doesn’t provide the definitive answer to everyone on your team’s questions about what makes your content unique to your brand. And that’s OK—that isn’t its job. Your content strategy maps out what you intend to do, for whom, and what...
In remembrance of the visionary artist and director David Lynch, who died last week, Kyle McLachlan shared something in his NY Times opinion piece that resonated with me: To David, what you thought mattered, too. With his actors, he didn’t want to give straight direction because he saw us as artists and he knew the process of getting there was part and parcel of the art. I spent quality time on the sofa with our two bulldogs and two cats, letting them use me as an on-demand hug provider and human pillow. Today, I’m kicking off the new year by...
